Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar has reshuffled a number of senior positions within the ministry, including several aides and general-directors within the Public Security Sector, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported Tuesday.

The reshuffle includes five appointments and three relocations within the ministry, according to Al-Ahram.

Appointments cover a diverse range of positions, including: the appointment of Major General Alaa Ali as assistant to the Interior Minister for the Security and Protection sector; and Major General Gamal She’ir as assistant to the Interior Minister for the Medical Services sector. Other appointments include deputy of the general director of Legal Affairs and the general director of the Central Traffic department.

Earlier in March, former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim was removed from his post as part of a cabinet reshuffle by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. Ibrahim was replaced by former head of the National Security Agency, Magdy Abdel Ghaffar. Ibrahim was appointed advisor to the Prime Minister on security issues.

Along with Ibrahim’s removal, at least twenty posts were reshuffled during that time, including ministerial deputies responsible for National Security, General Security and Sinai, according to Al-Ahram.

Rights activists and some opposition figures have vocally criticised human rights violations by the police, whilst also condemning the torture and violent treatment of civilians.

Egypt has witnessed an unstable security situation in recent months, marked by recurring terrorist attacks on security forces and on other targets, especially in the Sinai Peninsula.
